Trois nouvelles de lutherie sont tombées la même semaine, et elles racontent, chacune à sa façon, un pan différent de ce qui se joue aujourd’hui dans la fabrication d’instruments indépendante — de la plus artisanale à la plus industrialisée.

Commençons par la mienne. La Guembasse que je joue — corps en tilleul, table en épicéa, manche en érable — est sortie de l’atelier de Philippe Berne, mon luthier, et porte un nom qui dit tout : contraction de guembri et de basse, l’instrument nord-africain à cordes pincées et son homologue électrique occidental fondus en un seul corps. Ce n’est pas une réédition d’un modèle existant ni une variation sur un standard connu — c’est un instrument pensé une fois, pour une personne, qui n’existe nulle part ailleurs.

À l’autre bout du spectre, le luthier Belforti prépare pour 2026 au moins deux nouvelles formes de corps de basse, construites sur une plateforme commune guitare/basse entièrement interchangeable — un socle technique unique qui accueille plusieurs identités formelles. L’idée n’est pas absurde : elle industrialise, à petite échelle, ce que la lutherie artisanale a toujours fait à la main, à savoir séparer ce qui doit rester singulier (la forme, l’identité visuelle) de ce qui peut être mutualisé (l’électronique, le montage). Mais ça reste, fondamentalement, une autre philosophie que celle de mon atelier.

Et puis il y a Ligérie, un nouveau venu dans la lutherie hexagonale, basé en région Loire, qui fabrique guitares et basses électriques en France — sans autre argument de vente, pour l’instant, que le lieu de fabrication lui-même. C’est peu et c’est beaucoup : dans un marché dominé par des usines asiatiques et quelques grandes marques américaines, chaque nouvel atelier français qui tient plus d’une saison mérite qu’on le suive.

Ce qui relie ces trois nouvelles, ce n’est pas une tendance technique commune — Belforti industrialise, Berne façonne pièce par pièce, Ligérie s’installe tout simplement — c’est qu’elles dessinent, ensemble, un écosystème français de lutherie indépendante suffisamment vivant pour qu’on puisse encore, en 2026, faire fabriquer un instrument qui n’existe qu’en un seul exemplaire. J’en ai déjà parlé à propos d’une pédale signée à la main : ce n’est jamais le son qui change quand on sait qui a fabriqué l’objet. C’est ce qu’on ressent en le tenant.

Three pieces of lutherie news landed the same week, and each tells, in its own way, a different part of what’s happening today in independent instrument-making — from the most artisanal to the most industrialized.

Let’s start with mine. The Guembasse I play — linden body, spruce top, maple neck — came out of Philippe Berne’s workshop, my luthier, and carries a name that says it all: a contraction of guembri and bass, the North African plucked-string instrument and its Western electric counterpart fused into a single body. It’s not a reissue of an existing model or a variation on a known standard — it’s an instrument thought up once, for one person, that exists nowhere else.

At the other end of the spectrum, luthier Belforti is preparing at least two new bass body shapes for 2026, built on a shared, fully interchangeable guitar/bass platform — a single technical base hosting several formal identities. The idea isn’t absurd: it industrializes, on a small scale, what artisanal lutherie has always done by hand — separating what must stay singular (shape, visual identity) from what can be pooled (electronics, assembly). But it remains, fundamentally, a different philosophy from my workshop’s.

And then there’s Ligérie, a newcomer to French lutherie, based in the Loire region, making electric guitars and basses in France — with no other selling point, for now, than the place of manufacture itself. That’s both little and a lot: in a market dominated by Asian factories and a handful of big American brands, every new French workshop that lasts more than a season deserves to be watched.

What links these three items isn’t a shared technical trend — Belforti industrializes, Berne shapes piece by piece, Ligérie simply gets established — it’s that together they sketch a French independent lutherie ecosystem still alive enough that, in 2026, one can still have an instrument made that exists in a single copy. I’ve already written about this regarding a hand-signed pedal: it’s never the sound that changes when you know who made the object. It’s what you feel holding it.
