English version

Polyend just unveiled the Loop, presented this week at Guitar Summit 2026 in Mannheim: four independent loop tracks, usable in mono or stereo, with three playback modes — forward, backward, ping-pong —, a four-track drum machine (500+ kits, 350+ patterns, 2,000+ samples and 180+ ready-to-use loops) and 100+ tempo-synced effects, all packed into a unit with a color display, four endless encoders and two potentiometers. Pedal format, TRS MIDI and USB-C, stereo I/O. Preorder at $599/€599, shipping announced for October.

What holds my attention isn’t so much the spec sheet — generous, but unremarkable for 2026 — as the choice of format. My Polyend Tracker Mini, which I already discussed here in a piece about the tension between generative rule and direct gesture, is a tabletop object: you sit in front of it, watch its screen, navigate its menus. The Loop, by contrast, sits on the floor, played with your foot between two chords on bass or guitar — a completely different bodily gesture, even though the internal logic (tracks, patterns, synced effects) stays very close to the Tracker Mini’s. Same maker, same technical vocabulary, but a relationship to the body that changes everything.

This move onto the pedalboard isn’t new territory for me. My two Gamechanger Audio pedals — the PLUS pedal, which I’ve had for years, and the more recent Recoder, both discussed in an earlier article — live in the exact spot the Loop will live in for whoever picks one up: under the foot, never under the eyes. You don’t watch a screen to drive them, you feel them. The Loop, with its color display and four encoders, attempts a curious synthesis of the two worlds: the visual control of a tabletop machine, grafted onto the format and use of an effects pedal. I don’t yet know whether that synthesis holds together — I haven’t had one under my foot yet — but the idea of having to read a floor-level screen mid-song rather than feel a button under my toe intrigues me about as much as it worries me a little.

Still, the real point, for me, lies elsewhere. What this announcement really tells is a story about the whole sector: looper pedals, long conceived as simple guitar loopers, are now absorbing full drum-machine functions — and conversely, tabletop drum machines like my Tracker Mini increasingly borrow the loopers’ layered-overdub logic. Gear categories that seemed stable just five years ago are dissolving into one another. It’s no accident that the same manufacturer can, in the same year, sell a tabletop instrument and a floor pedal that all but speak the same language.

٠̩̩̩Яا☪⚉ ḍḁ ㅒД╰ṽᴬ®Е☡

English version

Three pieces of news converge this week around the same tension: making tools more accessible on one hand, embracing imperfection as an expressive parameter on the other — and these aren’t two opposing movements, as I’ll try to show.

Shuffle Drummer is an entirely free groovebox that runs in the browser — no install, no account, a sequencer where every step can be shifted down to the tick, and a sampler capable of isolating the melody from a recording to resequence it. Technically, it’s the same family as the Oficina de Sonido Clave or the oZoe I wrote about recently: a drum machine thought of first as a generation tool rather than a reproduction one. Except here the entry price is zero and the platform is a browser tab — the form changes, the logic stays.

At the opposite end of the spectrum, Walrus Audio is releasing a new pedal, the Fundamental Lo-Fi Delay, whose whole function is to degrade repeats into imperfect textures — tape noise, loss of definition, everything a high-end delay usually tries to eliminate becomes the main material here. It’s the same gesture as my Recoder, which imprints the spectral signature of a raw sound onto everything played afterward: degradation is no longer a flaw to fix, it’s an ingredient you choose to add.

The NAMM 2026 roundup confirms the trend on the broader hardware side: high-end polyphonic synths, but also a wave of budget samplers and clones — a Behringer Juno, among others, making accessible for a few hundred euros what cost ten times as much not long ago. Same movement as Shuffle Drummer, at a different scale: lowering the barrier to entry without, in theory, sacrificing much of the essentials.

What strikes me, putting these three items side by side, is that they don’t tell two opposite stories but a single one: the more accessible tools become, the more imperfection turns back into a deliberate choice rather than a technical constraint one has to live with. When anyone can get a clean synth for next to nothing, what distinguishes a sound is no longer its cleanliness — it’s how, and whether, you choose to dirty it.

٠̩̩̩Яا☪⚉ ḍḁ ㅒД╰ṽᴬ®Е☡

The post Plus accessible, plus imparfait : la même histoire appeared first on Rico da Halvarez.

٠̩̩̩Яا☪⚉ ḍḁ ㅒД╰ṽᴬ®Е☡

English version

Three pieces of lutherie news landed the same week, and each tells, in its own way, a different part of what’s happening today in independent instrument-making — from the most artisanal to the most industrialized.

Let’s start with mine. The Guembasse I play — linden body, spruce top, maple neck — came out of Philippe Berne’s workshop, my luthier, and carries a name that says it all: a contraction of guembri and bass, the North African plucked-string instrument and its Western electric counterpart fused into a single body. It’s not a reissue of an existing model or a variation on a known standard — it’s an instrument thought up once, for one person, that exists nowhere else.

At the other end of the spectrum, luthier Belforti is preparing at least two new bass body shapes for 2026, built on a shared, fully interchangeable guitar/bass platform — a single technical base hosting several formal identities. The idea isn’t absurd: it industrializes, on a small scale, what artisanal lutherie has always done by hand — separating what must stay singular (shape, visual identity) from what can be pooled (electronics, assembly). But it remains, fundamentally, a different philosophy from my workshop’s.

And then there’s Ligérie, a newcomer to French lutherie, based in the Loire region, making electric guitars and basses in France — with no other selling point, for now, than the place of manufacture itself. That’s both little and a lot: in a market dominated by Asian factories and a handful of big American brands, every new French workshop that lasts more than a season deserves to be watched.

What links these three items isn’t a shared technical trend — Belforti industrializes, Berne shapes piece by piece, Ligérie simply gets established — it’s that together they sketch a French independent lutherie ecosystem still alive enough that, in 2026, one can still have an instrument made that exists in a single copy. I’ve already written about this regarding a hand-signed pedal: it’s never the sound that changes when you know who made the object. It’s what you feel holding it.

🇬🇧 English version below

٠̩̩̩Яا☪⚉ ḍḁ ㅒД╰ṽᴬ®Е☡

English version

The AI music generator landscape has, by 2026, settled into a shape that would have seemed unlikely barely two years ago. Suno and Udio, the two names behind most of the copyright infringement lawsuits, have resolved the bulk of their litigation and signed licensing deals with several major labels — which doesn’t mean the issue is closed, only that it has changed nature: from a legal gray zone to a normalized market, complete with contracts and revenue shares.

What these tools can actually do, though, remains more limited than is often presented — a recent overview documents it with precision: producing a convincing track within a well-worn genre, yes; sustaining a coherent artistic intention across the length of an album, much less so. The distinction matters, because it maps fairly precisely where automation stops and where real compositional work, despite everything, still begins.

This is where Bandcamp’s decision, which I already mentioned and which Ether-Michel Pillequant revisited in his own way not long ago, makes full sense: while part of the industry signs licensing deals to legitimize these tools, an entire platform chooses to ban them outright. That’s not a contradiction — it’s a fault line running through the sector, between those who want to regulate generative AI and those who’d rather cut it off entirely.

Personally, I find myself somewhere between the two — and Cyma Forma’s RND helped me understand exactly where. That synth offers, with every button press, a complete and unexpected musical idea: it’s generative in the strict sense, and I use it without the slightest hesitation. The difference with an AI generator capable of producing a finished track start to finish isn’t the presence of an algorithm — there’s one in both cases — it’s what’s left for me to do once the proposal is on the table. The RND gives me a starting point I have to respond to. A full AI generator, by contrast, offers me an answer that’s already been given.

I’ve already written here about how unpredictable our own bots have always been in contrast to the far more unsettling unpredictability the AI industry is now discovering against its own will. Music doesn’t escape that tension: between a tool that surprises me because I left it real room for chance, and a tool that surprises me because it learned, across millions of tracks, to guess what I expected from it, there’s the whole difference between a collaboration and an order placed.

English version

Two drum machines discovered the same week, two almost opposite philosophies — as is often the case with gear, what interests me is less the technical specs than what each design choice reveals about one’s relationship to chance and control.

The Oficina de Sonido Clave is a portable, eight-track drum machine entirely driven by a Euclidean sequencer: instead of placing each hit by hand, you specify a number of pulses and a number of steps, and the algorithm spreads the hits as evenly as possible across the grid — the same mathematical logic that, in nature, governs how leaves are arranged around a stem. It’s a family of machines I collect somewhat in spite of myself: the Gecho Loopsynth already in my studio runs on a related principle, as does Cyma Forma’s RND, which I wrote about here not long ago. Handing part of the rhythm over to a rule rather than my hand isn’t giving up on composing — it’s moving composition up one level, onto the choice of rule rather than the choice of hit.

The oZoe Drum Box takes the opposite path. French-made, sample-based, explicitly built around one stated principle: no menu-diving, one button per function, immediate control that recalls the spirit of my MPC One or my Polyend Tracker Mini. Here, no mathematical rule stands between gesture and sound — whatever randomness there is comes from the hand, not the algorithm.

I don’t really have a preference between the two logics, and I’d distrust myself if I did: Cyma Forma’s RND taught me that a generated starting point sets the tone for an improvisation, while the Tracker Mini taught me that direct, unmediated control keeps its full value once the idea is already there. The two machines discussed here each sit squarely on one side of that line — which may be exactly what I like most about their near-simultaneous announcement.

I’ll note, in passing, that this tension between generative rule and direct gesture isn’t new to me: it’s roughly the same debate that already ran through the free-music movement back when I helped found Dogmazic — the machine that composes with you versus the one that merely obeys you. Twenty-five years later, it’s two small drum machines replaying the same question.

I brought it on vacation, almost out of curiosity more than necessity, and I didn’t expect it to become quite this indispensable. Cyma Forma’s RND synth — co-designed with Bambounou — rests on an idea simple enough to feel almost provocative: a single button, eight synthesis engines (subtractive, FM, acid, noise, speech, Karplus-Strong, supersaw, additive), and with every press, a complete musical idea appears, ready to use.

What struck me wasn’t so much the sound quality — which is genuinely good — as the function the object ends up performing almost in spite of itself: it sets the tone. Not in the strict sense of a reference pitch, but in the sense that it offers a starting point finished and unexpected enough that all you have to do is respond. Composing turns into a conversation rather than a blank page.

I’m currently turning that logic over in every direction for a project I’m putting together, probably with Döner 2 le son — without saying too much for now, let’s just say it’ll involve live improvisation and letting chance decide who triggers the starting sound. Nothing is fixed yet, but the idea grew directly out of hours spent, on vacation, pressing a single button and seeing what came out.

More on that soon — in the meantime, the catalog is on Bandcamp.
